"Being a university professor allows me to pursue interesting research questions at the intersection of technology and business, and to be engaged with bright, young undergraduate and graduate students in a stimulating learning environment."
In which online degree program do you teach?
Which courses do you teach online?
MIS-5450 (Management of Information Systems).
What do students learn in your classes? What is the expected outcome?
My course aims to deepen students' understanding and appreciation of the strategic role that information technology plays in organizations and to provide key concepts for effectively planning, building, deploying, and managing information resources in enterprise environments. The course is relevant for students seeking career opportunities in IT management or consulting, as well as those individuals aspiring to a career in general (non-IT) management. Given the degree to which today's organizations rely on IT to help sustain or enable competitive advantage, it is essential for all managers to understand the basic elements of IT and how it can be effectively deployed to enhance value and drive innovation.
Why did you start teaching?
Being a university professor allows me to pursue interesting research questions at the intersection of technology and business, and to be engaged with bright, young undergraduate and graduate students in a stimulating learning environment.
What's the best advice that you could give your students?
What qualities make someone particularly successful in the area in which you teach?
In addition to having content knowledge in a particular area (e.g. finance, accounting, IT), I feel that soft skills in communication and interpersonal relationships are vital in today's business world. It's also important for up-and-coming managers to be able to deal with complexity and not be frightened by ambiguity. Sometimes no clear 'textbook' solution exists, so managers need the ability to assess complex situations and then be willing to step out and make their best decision, even under uncertainty. Finally, I'd add that having strong ethical values and having a willingness to help others succeed is essential to success in today's business world.
What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in business face today?
Emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, and Smart Machines afford many opportunities to existing businesses and potential for entirely new business models. A major challenge for business people today is to assess the role of emerging technologies to determine their potential disruptive capabilities and how they might be integrated into current and future business models.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
"The Fifth Discipline" by Peter Senge.
Tell us something your students may not know about you:
I'm originally from New England (Massachusetts), but grew up and went to high school in south Florida (Boca Raton). I was a defensive back in college at Columbia University and coached for about 2 years in Florida right after college before going for my MBA. I enjoy the beach, fishing, and being outdoors. I'm married to an elementary education school teacher and have three daughters.
