In which online degree program do you teach?
Which classes do you teach online?
BUS 5602 Microeconomics and ECO 5415 Economics for Managers
What do students learn in your classes? What is the expected outcome?
In BUS 5602 Microeconomics, students learn the key economic principles that are essential for success in ECO 5415. In ECO 5415 Economics for Managers, students learn key economic ideas that are relevant for managerial decision-making. In this class, I focus on concepts and discuss many "real-world" examples so that (I hope) long after taking the course the student will remember and be able to apply the ideas and thereby be a more effective manager.
Why did you start teaching?
As an undergraduate Economics major, I wanted to learn more, so I applied to graduate school. My teaching responsibilities in graduate school were enjoyable, and I decided to pursue Economics teaching and research as a career. I am now in my 31st year on the Baylor faculty. It has been a great ride, and I am still going strong.
What's the best advice that you ever received?
"Keep the relationship, but set the boundary."
If you are having serious problems with a friend, family member, or colleague, the temptation is to withdraw and cut off contact completely. Rather than doing that, decide what you can manage in terms of interaction and set that boundary. Your life will be richer if you do this.
What's the best advice that you could give your students?
"Sometimes done is better than good."
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
Riker, William H. (1986). "The Art of Political Manipulation." (Yale University Press).
What qualities make someone particularly successful in the area in which you teach?
BY FAR, the ability to confront people in such a way that one, the person you confront is not alienated and is motivated to improve, and two, you do not make yourself sick with anxiety in the whole process. Understand and plan for the fact that the future will not be like the present.
What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in the profession face today?
Managing people (as always).
