How do you define success?

Do you have a preconceived idea in mind when it comes to defining success? Has your definition changed over the years?

Success means different things to different people, and it changes throughout a person’s life. Famed football coach Vince Lombardi once said, “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.”

Or you may want to define it like Christopher Reeve and see success in a broader, more philosophical light: “Success is finding satisfaction in giving a little more than you take.”

Definitions of Success Vary

These two views on success are not mutually exclusive, nor are they the only two views of success. Some count as many as 10 different measures of success. Further, our own views of success are likely to evolve over the course of our lifetimes.

But for much of our adult lives, defining success centers around our ability to further our careers and establish a strong financial foundation in our lives–material success.

It is interesting that material success can empower us to pursue some of the more spiritual and philosophical dimensions of success. You see, to fulfill Reeve’s vision of success, we first need to be in a position to give “a little more than we take.”

Aside from encouragement, we cannot do much to help others achieve the more cerebral side of success. But when it comes to the way Lombardi defined success, we can begin to put together a game plan to help us achieve it.

Ways to Achieve Material Success

One of the best ways to achieve our goals and assure our material or commercial success is by expanding our knowledge and experience – which, by the way, is a kind of intellectual success. For the busy professional who desires this kind of success, an online MBA program can be a great way to achieve it.

Here are some of the ways completing an online MBA program will bolster your ability to enjoy success:

  • More hiring and promotion opportunities.
  • Increased earning power.
  • A larger professional network.
  • Improved skills.
  • Accelerated career growth.

When you have added an MBA to your resume, you will find that your opportunities increase dramatically. And as you are considering your career options, perhaps it would also be a good time to reflect on how your approach to defining success changes with the new opportunities available to you.
