Why did you start teaching?

I'm a scholar, it's what I do. I produce (research) and disseminate (teach) knowledge.

What do students learn in your classes? What is the expected outcome?

I expect students in my class to critically re-evaluate their approach to human interaction. This is an opportunity to think twice about how we interact and how we build important relationships to benefit everyone involved with the interaction.

The expected outcome is that they will question their assumptions, think about their interactions differently and better understand why people act the way they do in an organizational interaction.

What's the best advice that you ever received?

Look both ways before you cross the street.

What's the best advice that you could give your students?

Be open to thinking creatively. Be open to new experience. Don't just accept what you are told in the workplace – examine it, question it, use data and science to try and understand it better. There is always more that you can learn.

What is the one book you think everyone should read?

The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway.

What qualities make someone particularly successful in the area in which you teach?

Perseverance, honesty, and openness to experiencing new things and learning.

What do you think is the biggest challenge that people in the profession face today?

Everything is hurried. There is no time to develop and build. There is an urgency to produce. There is a desire to (very quickly) communicate, get the lowest price and get the most for yourself. This comes at the cost of understanding, precision and relationships. It puts people into a moral dilemma (a choice between people and profits). Overcoming this moral dilemma and satisfying both people and profits is the key to success.
